Chantry of all saints, founded by the Beauchamps, in the present South aisle and Lady Chapel.

Chantries closed as part of Henry VIII's policy towards the Church.

Statues and wall paintings disappeared in Puritan times. Fabric neglected.

8th October - Royalists smoke out Parliamentarians from the Church, which had been used as a barracks, stable and cookhouse. (1)

Rebuilding of Church essential, probably due to severe dilapidation.  (2)

England at war with Spain.  George 1st dies 

1729

Church rebuilt, except for 14th century tower.  It had a nave, north and south aisles with galleries, an organ gallery at the west end and a shallow apse (in place of chancel).   It cost £ 1,020.

By 1871

The Gothic chancel had replaced the apse and the huge three decker pulpit and galleries had been removed.

1) The civil war in Stratford-upon-Avon     Philip Tennant   Shakespeare birthplace Trust

 

2) Recent research by Mr Norman Barker has indicated that the pre-1729 church was not destroyed by fire, as previously thought.  A number of wooden artefacts, including the west organ gallery demolished in 1870, have been identified as existing in and surviving from the earlier building.
