Welcome to the website of St Nicholas Parish Church, Alcester, Warwickshire.

St Nicholas church is situated in the centre of Alcester and is the largest church of the Alcester Minster group of churches in the Church of England Diocese of Coventry, which also includes  Holy Trinity Arrow, St Peter Coughton, St Mary Magdalene Great Alne, St Mary & All Saints Haselor, St Mary the Virgin Kinwarton, Sambourne Chapel and  St James Weethley.

The Life of St Nicholas Church - Main Services

Sundays

The regular services each week

8.00am

Holy Eucharist - Book of Common Prayer  (traditional) - said

A 'said' service of about half an hour's duration,  including a sermon, following the Order of Communion from the Book of Common Prayer.  

11.00am

Sung Eucharist - Common Worship (contemporary) on 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of the month

The main service of the day of about an hour's duration with a congregational setting of the sung parts of the Eucharist, hymns, organ and robed choir, including a sermon.

On 1st Sunday a time to meet and chat over coffee and biscuits afterwards

11.00am

Sunday Live - Family Service on 2nd Sunday of the month

An informal service without Communion, arranged  particularly for families with young children, including exciting activities based around a monthly theme.

11.00am

Sunday Eucharist Live - Informal Family Communion on 4th Sunday of the month

An informal service with communion, including hymns and worship songs with piano and / or guitar accompaniment.

6.00pm

Minster Praise on 1st Sunday of the Month is held in rotation around the Minster Churches during the 'daylight' months from Easter to Harvest.  See 'This Month'.

A service of praise, prayer and teaching, with hymns and occasional guest preacher

Holy Eucharist - Common Worship (contemporary) - said

A mid-week 'said' service of about half an hour's duration, followed by coffee and biscuits at 'Open House' in Church House - an opportunity for a friendly banter to put the world to rights.

There are also services on Saints Days and Holy Days when not coinciding with the regular services.

The Ministry Leadership Team also includes a number of Lay Readers and Retired Priests, who together ensure that regular services are provided throughout the Minster.

St Nicholas Church Choir

There is both a senior and junior choir.  Both meet on a Tuesday evening  for practice (juniors 6.45pm, seniors 7.30pm) and take an active part in the 11.00am Sunday Sung Eucharist.  They also sing at the Church Festivals and by request at Weddings and Funerals.

The Ark

During the services young children may play quietly in the Ark under parental supervision.  Please help to tidy up afterwards. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Doughnut Club

Children of primary school age are welcome on the first Sunday of the month at St Nicholas School from 9.30am until 10.30am.   Activities include Games, Songs, Crafts and Stories.

Bible Study Group

This group meets once a week on a Tuesday to discuss various books or topics from the bible.  The bible is taken seriously, but the group finds time for fun, laughter, and coffee.  Members come from different denominations and attend as often as commitments allow.  New members are always very welcome. Minster Prayer Group

A small group, with a representative from each of the Minster parishes, to pray for those in need or any difficulty.  Individual telephone numbers may be found inside the front cover of the Minster magazine.

Church Women's Guild

The C.W.G looks after the tidiness and cleanliness of the Church.  It has a cleaning rota of helpers, flower arrangers, and various tasks to ensure the church looks its best.  Contact Sylvia 764977

Open House

Every Wednesday morning from 10.15am Church House is open to all to drop in for coffee (or tea) biscuits and a chat.  It follows after the Wednesday morning Eucharist and has become a very popular midweek gathering.

 

 

 

 

 

Bell Ringers

The bell ringers meet to practise on Thursday evenings at 7.45pm.  Contact Eric 762577

Mothers' Union

There are two branches within the Minster group of Churches: Alcester and Arrow (Marie Symonds 764609) and Kinwarton and Great Alne (Pauline Vining 763129)

Churchyard Group

Various members of the Garden group can be found tending the Churchyard on Saturday mornings and at other times.  Contact Eric 762577

Outreach Group

A small group who are able to offer help for those in difficulty, especially during bereavement.

Charity Group

A sub group of the PCC which decides on the distribution of 5% of the Church's Giving on a quarterly basis, generally to charities of the developing world.

Free expert advice is available on Redundancy, Job Hunting, Employment Law, Career and Retraining Opportunities, Debt Counselling, C.V. and Interview Preparation.  Please e-mail. jobsontues@btinternet.com to be put in contact with an adviser, or contact the Rector by phoning 01789 764261.  This is a free and confidential advice service for those who live or work in and around Alcester.

Bookstall

Apart from books, the bookstall stocks cards, postcards, souvenirs, gifts and much more, from locally produced fine crystal-ware to carved hardwood clocks.  The bookstall is open from Easter to Advent on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10.00am and 2.00pm, managed by a rota of volunteers.   All profits go towards maintaining the building and fabric of St NIcholas Church. 

 

 

 

 

 

Toilets

Modern toilets, including a toilet for disabled, can be found at the back of Church House.  From the west door, Church House is opposite across Butter Street.  Pass through the Churchyard side gate, cross over the pedestrian street and enter the middle blue door.  Proceed down the ancient passageway into a courtyard.  The toilets (signed Old Stables) are through the fourth door on the left.  The route is automatically lit.

Church House contains the meeting hall (known also as the Mission Room) and facilities for St Nicholas Church.  Over the past few years it has undergone extensive refurbishment and now has new heating, resurfaced floor, a new adjoining well-equipped kitchen, and separately accessible modern toilets for use at Church events.

The project continues to raise funds to complete the refurbished upstairs with its exposed Tudor timber frames and a covered access extension to the rear.
